It seems the mechanisms are a bit tricky for some people, so here's a guide
First of all, I really recommend you to set the chase_active cvar to 1. If you don't know how to do that, have a look at this introduction: The Nexuiz console.
The chase camera helps you seeing what's around you, and since you won't need to use weapons, it's not affecting your aim.
This game type works exactly like soccer: you need to get the ball into the enemy's goal, by bouncing it around without grabbing it.
It's a bit hard to get used to the controls, they seem quite random at first, but it is possible to somewhat control the ball, I promise.
The easiest trick is to jump when you're touching the ball to make it go higher.
Note that the ball will always try to move in front of you when you touch it. Touching it backwards or from the side results in different behaviour.
Also, the Mortar is only there for decoration, it won't do anything.
This plays like basketball: you can grab the ball and run around with it.
The ball is made more visible with effects (either fire or a little light). When you touch it, the effect is transfered to you, and you can shoot it with the mortar's primary fire (left click).
Depending on the server's configuration, the ball will be either directly launched, or you will see a power meter in the lower left corner of the screen on the ball icon, to control the speed of the ball when released.
Be attentive! Other people can steal the ball from you when you're carrying it! You can do this using the secondary fire (right click). This will shoot a projectile with a very short range, and give you the ball if you hit the ball carrier.
When there are many people on the server, you better make passes to your teammates, or your ball will be stolen in not more than one second.
